Caricature Christmas Spirit

Edward’s Caricatures here, and I’ve got some good news for you! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Well, actually, I don’t know when you’re reading this. So, if you’re sweltering in the dog days of summer, then just close your eyes, imagine Bing Crosby blessing those chilly ears of yours and get yourself in the yuletide spirit because this live event caricaturist is ready to get festive! And if it is Christmas time for you, then you needn’t imagine: you probably heard ol’ Bing three times before lunch.

No, but really, I love the Christmas season, and not just because affordable caricatures make great gifts (although they do). It’s because Christmas is a time for cutting loose, being merry and letting laughter unite families, friends and colleagues up and down the country. And today, it’s colleagues I want to talk about, specifically the power Christmas party caricatures have in bringing them together.

Being a live cartoonist means I go to more Christmas parties in a year than most people attend in a decade, and with all that experience, there’s one thing I’ve learned: silly cartoon faces are the great equaliser. Actually, I also learned that there IS a limit to the number of mince pies a person can consume in one sitting, but let’s stay on topic. Live hand drawn caricatures make everyone look a bit silly, and when everyone looks a bit silly, hierarchies start to wobble. A fearsome manager might become a goofy gal with a big grin and rosy cheeks; a distant colleague could transform in a flash into a friendly-looking guy with bushy eyebrows and a festive twinkle in his eye. 

Seeing your work pals and colleagues with cartoon faces makes them much easier to break bread with, and when people see their own funny side, they’re more open to embracing that funny side. They joke more, chat more, laugh more, and that makes for a party in which colleagues make genuine bonds. Of course, it also provides a fun activity for people to get stuck into while they’re digesting their Christmas dinner. And that’s without mentioning the fact that everyone gets a funny gift of their own to remember the night by, courtesy of yours truly.

As a caricature artist London is a fantastic place to spend Christmas. It warms my heart to see bosses treat their colleagues to a fun night. They work hard all year round, and to play a part in helping them blow off steam with some kind and fun caricatures is such a gift. I agree with the wise words of Wizzard: I really do wish it could be Christmas every day, although my waistline might have a few words to say about that…
